As the day progressed in most peoples eyes there was going to be only one winner, Lance McDermott, during the practice session he was looking unstoppable, and with most of the finest riders in the country in attendance everything else was a tough call, but at the end of the day, in that small window of time when it really mattered, it was Leatherheads Jimmy Pratt that was unstoppable, with twist to twist with added variation, big double cans and bags of style the judges were unanimous, Lance just couldn’t get what he want sewn up during the jam session.
Tom Dowie came in at third, the judges found it a hard call to make with Epic Clothing’s team rider Tom Gethin in strong contention, but after a long debate it was Dowies Nose down 3’s that bagged him the cash.
The Open category riders were low in numbers but pretty strong in everything else, the judging on this was not straight forward, Phillip Auckland had a pretty deep bag and was very smooth which got him the DMR crankset, Dyke local rider Tom Pinto has obviously spent a lot of time watching fellow local Jon Robinson, probably one of the smoothest riders out there over the weekend, and managed to run after run of seemless tricks, I guess the judges really are taking style and smoothness into account this year.
There were a host off wildcards out there though, some of the most out-there off-axis backflip I’ve seen, extended one handed double cans, tailwhips and even barhops.
The ’06 season is set to be the best yet, I can honestly say now that I have no idea whatsoever who is going to win the overall, let alone dominate in either category, I’m hoping that NASS is going to be a real show, time for us big-wheeler’s to get out there.
